Arrest and Booking
Everything begins with the arrest. Officers take the person to the Harris County Joint Processing Center at 700 North San Jacinto, the main booking jail downtown. Booking records identity, fingerprints, and the charges. This step can take several hours, so a delay before release is normal. Once booking is complete, the case moves toward a magistrate who will decide the bail amount.
How Bail Is Set
A magistrate reviews the case soon after booking, often within a day. Bail is the amount that secures the defendant’s return to court. The magistrate weighs the charge, any prior record, and ties to the community. Some charges carry a preset schedule, while others wait for the hearing. The figure can be high, which is where a bond comes in for most families.
Posting the Bond
With bail set, the family posts a bond to secure release. Paying the full amount in cash to the court is one option, refundable later. Most families instead work through a licensed bondsman, who posts the bond for a fee and handles the paperwork at the jail. A bondsman speeds posting and often shortens the wait. Fees and terms vary, so confirm them before you sign.
After Release: Court Dates
After the bond is posted, the court releases the defendant, usually from the same downtown jail. Release does not end the case. The defendant must attend every scheduled court date, and missing one can lead to a warrant and a forfeited bond. Keep the paperwork, note each date, and stay in contact with the bondsman. Showing up as required keeps the bond in good standing.
